Rymill Coonawarra winery, built in 1990, was designed by the distinguished Melbourne architect, Geoffrey Woodfall, who has won citations and awards of merit in both Victoria and South Australia since 1963.
The protective, gable roofs which dominate the building give the appearance of hovering above the well-insulated walls. Regional building materials have been used extensively, with external walls of Mount Gambier limestone, and internal of locally grown radiata pine.
From the elevated viewing balconies, visitors can observe the entire winemaking process of turning select grapes into fine wine, and indeed taste the finished product as they move around the building.
Ten years after the completion of the winery, we were pleased to learn that the Mitchell Beazley publication Wineries with Style pronounced it to be one of the top eighty in the world.
