An Australian Thoroughbred

Mary Riddoch

Mary RiddochMary Riddoch, the youngest daughter of John and Elizabeth, was born in 1871 and grew up at Yallum.

In 1902 she married Robert Rymill, the neighbouring farmer from Penola Station but, after only four years together, Robert was killed when his Darracq Phaeton car crashed at Breakneck Corner, Hamilton.

Mary was left with two infant sons to raise and an 11,000ha property to manage, both of which she accomplished with determination and efficiency.

She did not inherit an interest in the Coonawarra venture, but travelled extensively and lived in London for some years before returning to Penola, where she died in 1938.
