The Rymill Coonawarra vintage team is smiling about 2011. As usual the winemakers are keeping their thoughts to themselves on the final outcome of vintage but what we do know is how important it is to be in control of your own vineyards and winery facility.
Being able to spray, pick and then process fruit at the optimum time means that we will be making some great wines. This trying season that Mother Nature has provided has kept our vineyard crew extra busy but they have been up to the task producing great clean fruit for the winemakers. Thanks Micko and the team!
Seventy-five years ago the Research Yacht Penola was exploring the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, or Graham Land as it was then called. This year, the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, England, mounted an exhibition to celebrate the anniversary of the British Graham Land Expedition, which was led by Penola-born John Riddoch Rymill.
His son, Peter Rymill, was invited to open the exhibition, and to research the subsequent careers of the original sixteen expeditioners. This revealed that during World War II the captain of the RY Penola, RED Ryder RN, won a VC in the naval raid on St Nazaire; his brother Lisle, the second mate, later of the Royal Norfolk Regiment, was executed by the SS at Dunkirk; the meteorologist, Quintin Riley, worked with Ian Fleming on clandestine commando operations, and the chief pilot, Wilfred Hampton flew un-armed BOAC Mosquito fighter-bombers in and out of enemy-occupied Europe on espionage missions.
The Cambridge celebrations concluded on a decidedly quieter note, with a reunion dinner in St John's College attended by fifty descendants of the original expeditioners, when Peter was asked to propose a toast to their memory.

Cooling off in SA
During March Lauren Cooper, pictured here in-between Amelia and Sandrine, escaped Perth's heat-wave and spent a week at the winery learning more about Rymill Coonawarra at our busiest time of the year.
Lauren is an area manager for our national distributor Negociants in Western Australia. Whilst Lauren spent a lot of time working in the winery she also worked hard at corrupting Reg; bribery with ice-cream seemed to do the trick. We value highly our relationship with our distributor and think that it's great that members of their sales team are given the opportunity to learn about our label.
Since the last newsletter we have enjoyed some great social occasions in Coonawarra and also welcomed lots of visitors. Whilst the Coonawarra Cup in January was washed out at lunch-time we made the most of both the 1980s theme and bad weather conditions helping to raise money for the Queensland flood victims.
We have also enjoyed visits from Wine Adventure TV, and a Chinese delegation organised by Wine Australia. In April we listened to great jazz and enjoyed fine food at our jazz night during After Dark Celebrations.
- Coonawarra Cup - Scott Bradley (Financial Controller), Anna Skeer (Cellar Door Manager)
